Tech Spotlight: What is Smart Scheduling™
Rate of fragmentation
Large disks, multimedia files, applications, operating systems, system updates, virus signatures - all dramatically increase the rate of fragmentation. Fragmentation accumulates continuously. It would be physically impossible to manually keep up with the rate of fragmentation today.
Automatic defrag
Smart Scheduling proactively adjusts quickly to changes in volume fragmentation levels. Rather than your "best-guesses" as to the optimal frequency of defragmentation for a particular volume, Smart Scheduling algorithms are tuned to dynamically adjust automatic defrag based on a volume-level rate of fragmentation. This gives you proactive defragmentation - before fragmentation builds up - preventing system performance issues and subsequently providing faster defragmentation run times.
Transparent operation
Diskeeper's I/O Smart technology actively "listens" for I/O requests. During a defrag job, if another application or process needs access to the hard drive, Diskeeper intelligently pauses defragmentation until the other program I/O requests are fulfilled. Once that happens, Diskeeper gets the go-ahead to resume defragmentation until another request comes along. Combined with its high-speed engine, Diskeeper can easily defrag using the "spaces" between I/O requests even on busy servers.
Ease of use
Enabling disk defrag with Smart Scheduling is as simple as selecting it from the drop down menu and clicking "apply".
Diskeeper is working very well. We have it set with the smart scheduling option timed during the day during screen saver. We have observed less fragmentation, better performance. All of our computers use Diskeeper as the standard with the scheduled setting shown above. We have over 1500 Diskeeper licenses with 4 year maintenance. I do recommend Diskeeper to others all the time... It runs great.

All of our servers are running Diskeeper. The product is making a big difference in performance of the hard drive and improves a lot the server response time. Diskeeper has many excellent features. For an example "Set It and Forget It". That particular feature allows me to schedule defragmentation per drive per server, based on real needs and application. Because it is utilizing the Smart Scheduling, the defragmentation process is not going to start unexpectedly. It will examine the hard drive and after analyzing of fragmentation status, it will starts or postpone until next time. What is good about? It is not adding additional wear and tear to my valuable hard drives!
